Studio-X Johannesburg
Columbia University’s Architectural Hub, Johannesburg, South Africa. 2012-2013
Client: GSAPP, Columbia University
Area: 2,400 sq ft/ 225 sq m
Studio-X, launched in 2008 by GSAPP’s former dean, Mark Wigley, is a global network of research laboratories for exploring the future of cities. With locations in Beijing, Mumbai, New York, Rio de Janeiro and labs in Amman, São Paulo and Tokyo, it is intended to promote exchange among academics, citizens and governments. The facilities are designed to function as collaborative workshops by day and event spaces by night.
For the Studio-X location in Johannesburg, South Africa, as at other sites, the goal was to create a space that embraces various programs and activities, from collaborative work and exhibitions to lectures, projections and discussion panels. A flexible space is needed to quickly respond to programmatic change.
Design alternatives highlighted how program distribution could guide the design: flexible walls, panels and pin up boards that could be quickly re-arranged to allow for new space configuration and use. A set of schematic spatial plan alternatives, as well as lighting and electrical drawings were delivered. Studio-X Johannesburg opened in the end of 2014.
